Eagles lose in National Semi-Finals

The day started early for the team with breakfast at 5:30 a.m. and then to the rink to get ready for the game. Their opponent for the game was Davenport University. They were ranked #1 in the Central Division. Davenport had won all three of their round-robin games, out scoring their opponents 25 goals for / 4 goals against.

The game was fast and hard-hitting. Davenport scored once in the 1st period and once in the 2nd period. With a few minutes left in the game, the Eagles pulled the goalie for an extra attacker but Davenport managed to hit the open net. The final score of the game was 3 - 0.

In the other semi-final game, Michigan State University beat Colorado State University by a score of 7 - 4. The final game will be played Saturday evening between Davenport University and Michigan State University.

EWU players chosen to play in the All-Star game were:

  1. Mike Truex
  2. Kris Kushniruk
  3. Bill Shaw
Travis Popp and Mike Truex were selected to participate in the Skills Competition.

Eagles to play in Semi-Final game.

The Eagles played Ohio State University in their first game of the tournament on Wednesday. The Eagles out shot the Ohio team to win 6 - 1. Ohio was ranked #4 in the South East Division. The second game of the tournament was against the University of Michigan. They were ranked #3 in the Central division. The game was filled with penalties and it was impossible to get any flow to the game. There was even a rarely granted penalty shot given to Michigan which was successfully stopped by the Eagles goaltender, Brent Siedel. EWU lost by a score of 3 - 1.

Friday's game was against Penn State, who had already won their first 2 games of the tournament. Losing the Michigan game put the Eagles in a must win situation on Friday. To advance to the semi-final game on Saturday, the Eagles had to beat Penn State AND not allow more than 4 goals against them. The team came out to play with determination and had Penn State down 2 - 1 at the end of the 1st period. By the end of the 2nd period it was 4 - 2, EWU. Senior Travis Popp scored goal #5 and put the game away for EWU, with a final score of 5 - 2.

Four teams have made it to the semi-finals. EWU will play Davenport University and Michigan State will play Colorado State University. The winners of these two games will play Saturday night for the ACHA championship.

THE EAGLES REMAIN UNDEFEATED GOING INTO CHRISTMAS BREAK

The team traveled to Utah this weekend to play #12 ranked Weber State, #6 ranked Utah State and #11 ranked BYU.  All 3 teams play in beautiful ice rinks, constructed to support the Salt Lake City Olympics a couple years ago.  It gave the Eagles a taste of what it will be like to have their own rink on campus so the student body will have easier access to the rink and will allow more students to attend.

The Eagles beat Weber State by a score of 4-0 on Thursday night. The Friday night game was against Utah State University in Logan and was played in front of 1000 plus fans.  It was an exciting game for the fans who provided lots of additonal excitement to pump their team up.  This game went to overtime and ended in a 3-3 tie.  Saturday night found the team in Provo to play the BYU Icecats.  The final score of this game was 5-0.  This marks the 4th straight shut out by goaltender Brent Seidel.

The next scheduled games are Jan. 19 and 20 at Eagles Ice Arena in Spokane.  The visiting teams will be WSU and Idaho.  Please come to the game and support your undefeated Eastern Eagles.  We have had excellent support from our die hard fans so come to the game and bring a friend. The drawing will be held for the raffle items this weekend so be sure to purchase your tickets for your chance to win.  You do not have to be at the game to win.  The tickets cost $2 each and can be purchased from any one of the team members. The items to be raffled are:

1) EWU football season tickets

2) EWU basketball season tickets

3) football memorabilia

4) $ 500 cash

The Eagles defeated the Brigham Young University Icecats on Saturday night at Eagles Arena in Spokane by a score of 6-1. BYU is currently ranked #11 in the western division of the ACHA. Once again, the EWU students turned out to support their team despite the cold temperatures and the late game time. The Eagles head to Utah later this week to play 3 games before they go home for Christmas break.

The team will be selling $2 raffle tickets until mid January.  Tickets will be drawn during the next home weekend of Jan. 19-20 for the following items: EWU football season tickets,  EWU basketball season tickets, football memorabilia and $500 cash. Tickets can be purchased from any player.

EAGLES WIN THANKSGIVING WESTERN CLASSIC IN FT. COLLINS

The Eagles had an outstanding weekend of hockey. After an all night, 18 hour bus ride to Ft.Collins, CO. they played their first game of the tournament against #2 ranked Colorado State University. After 3 periods of a hard fought game, the game was tied at 3-3. The game was still tied after the 5 minute overtime period so it went to a shootout. The Eagles scored 2 goals to Colorado's' one and won the the game.

The next morning, they met the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers play in the Central division so this was a rare opportunity to play them. The final score was EWU, 7 and U of N, 0.

Winning both their games placed EWU into the championship game on Sunday afternoon. Their opponent, University of Colorado Buffaloes, had also won both of their games against the University of New Mexico Ice Wolves and the University of Idaho Vandals. The Buffaloes are currently ranked #1 in the Western division. At one point in the game the Eagles found themselves down by a score of 5-3, but came back to tie the game at 5-5. The Colorado spectators that began the game somewhat loudly were now extremely quiet. The game went to a 5 minute overtime, the Eagles took a two minute penalty, but managed to kill it off to keep the score tied at the end of overtime. For the second time in the tournament, the Eagles found themselves in a shootout. The Eagles scored 2 goals to the Buffaloes 0 goals and won the tournament.
